How to buy sneakers on eBay without getting burned

Authenticity Guarantee, style codes, seller signals and pricing: a practical guide to scoring pairs on the biggest marketplace.

eBay has the deepest pool of sneaker listings anywhere: new, used, rare sizes and pairs that sold out years ago. It also rewards buyers who know what to check. Here's the short version.

1. Let the Authenticity Guarantee work for you

Most sneakers sold over roughly $100 in the US route through eBay's Authenticity Guarantee: the pair ships to eBay's authenticators, gets inspected and tagged, then continues to you. It's free for buyers and removes most of the fake risk that used to define marketplace shopping. Look for the blue checkmark on listings.

2. Search by style code, not just name

Every sneaker has a style code printed on the box label and the inside tag, like DD1391-100 for the Panda Dunk. Searching the code filters out lookalikes, kids' sizes labeled confusingly, and unrelated pairs. Every ShoeRack page lists the style code exactly for this reason.

3. Read the photos, then the seller

Real listing photos beat stock images: you want the actual pair, the box label and the size tag. Then check the seller's feedback score and how long they've been selling. An established seller with hundreds of positive sneaker sales is a very different risk than a zero-feedback account, even with authentication in the middle.

4. Know the market price before you bid

Check the price history chart on the sneaker's ShoeRack page before you commit. Auctions ending at odd hours often close below the going rate; Buy It Now listings from motivated sellers dip below it too. If a deal looks impossibly good on a hyped pair, it usually is - slow down and check the details.

5. Used pairs are the market's best-kept secret

Lightly worn pairs routinely sell 30 to 50 percent below deadstock prices. For shoes you actually plan to wear, that gap is free money. Check sole wear and creasing in the photos and factor in that patina is normal.
