The story of the Air Jordan 5 Retro
Released in 1990, the Air Jordan 5 drew its shark-tooth midsole graphics from the nose art of WWII P-51 Mustang fighter planes. It introduced a translucent icy outsole, a reflective 3M tongue and lace locks, all firsts for the line. Jordan scored 69 points in a game wearing the 5, and Will Smith wore multiple pairs on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, giving the model lasting pop-culture weight. Fire Red, Grape and Metallic remain the cornerstone colorways, while modern collaborations with Off-White and A Ma Maniere have kept the 5 in the rotation of serious collectors.
