Air Max 1 ‘Obsidian’

Tinker Hatfield, inspired by the inside-out architecture of the Pompidou Centre in Paris, cut a window into the midsole of a running shoe in 1987 and let the world see the Air bag inside. The Air Max 1 launched visible Air and, with it, Nike's most enduring franchise. The original University Red pair is a design-museum piece, and Air Max Day, March 26, celebrates its launch date. Collaborations with Patta, Travis Scott and atmos, plus the Big Bubble reissue of the original larger window, keep the AM1 essential nearly four decades on.
