The story of the 550

The 550 was a 1989 basketball shoe that sold modestly and vanished. Designer Teddy Santis of Aime Leon Dore convinced New Balance to revive it in 2020, and his cream-and-green editions ignited one of the great modern sneaker runs: the 550 went from forgotten to everywhere in eighteen months. Its blocky panels and honest 80s proportions made it the anti-hype hype shoe, and White/Green remains the definitive general release.
