The story of the Air More Uptempo
Designer Wilson Smith gambled in 1996 that typography could be a shoe's entire identity, blasting AIR across the sidewalls in letters visible from the cheap seats. Scottie Pippen wore it through the Bulls' 72-win seasons and the Atlanta Olympics, and the Uptempo became shorthand for 90s basketball excess. Japan kept it alive as a fashion object; Supreme and Off-White collaborations confirmed it. Loud, heavy and unapologetic, it remains the most legible sneaker ever made.
